Our Belt Exams and Karate Graduation in Calgary is an important milestone where students demonstrate their progress, discipline, and commitment to karate. Each level reflects not only technical skills but also growth in focus, confidence, and character. All eligible students will be automatically scheduled for their belt exam, and a confirmation email with full details—including time, requirements, and preparation guidelines—will be sent in advance. We encourage students to come prepared to their karate classes, in a clean gi with their current belt, ready to perform at their best and take the next step in their karate journey.
It is important that all Karate-ka (karate students) fully understand the expectations for regular training and the requirements for belt exams. The Sensei is responsible for providing students with the necessary tools to achieve their next rank. Practicing all techniques taught in Karate classes, both in and out of the classroom, is essential.
Consistent improvement for kyu (colored) belts requires that Karate-ka trains regularly—once a week for students from white to orange, and twice a week for green belts and higher. If a Karate-ka cannot maintain this training frequency, they should expect a slower rate of progress toward their karate graduation in Calgary.
When a student first starts karate, they may face some challenges with body coordination. Following this initial awkward stage, most students notice a gradual and significant improvement in their form, speed, and power for up to a year. After years of training, students often encounter a plateau, where advancement feels stagnant. This experience is common among all Karate-ka.
The best strategy to overcome plateaus is to maintain consistent training frequency and continue practicing the techniques taught by the instructor.

In our Karate classes, students progress through various belt exams, starting from the 10 KYU - White / Yellow stripe, moving to 9 KYU - Yellow, then to 8 KYU - Yellow / Orange stripe, followed by 7 KYU - Orange, 6 KYU - Orange / Green stripe, and continuing to 5 KYU - Green, 4 KYU - Purple, 3 KYU - Blue, 2 KYU - Brown, and 1 KYU - Brown / Black stripe. Finally, achieving the 1 DAN - Black Belt is a significant milestone celebrated during Karate graduation events in Calgary.

During your belt exams, you will be asked to demonstrate basic techniques, including precise punches, kicks, blocks, and strikes with power. In addition to this, you will likely need to perform one or more katas, which are structured sequences of movements that simulate a fight against multiple opponents. Partner work is also a component of the belt exams; you may be required to execute techniques with a partner, such as blocks, strikes, throws, and joint locks. Sparring is another key aspect where you will demonstrate your ability to apply techniques in realistic fighting situations, often against one or more opponents. To prove your understanding of the art, you may also need to showcase your knowledge of karate terminology, history, and principles. Physical fitness plays an important role in your karate classes, and you might be asked to perform exercises like push-ups, sit-ups, and running to demonstrate your conditioning. Lastly, throughout the karate graduation in Calgary, maintaining mental focus and control is essential, as karate demands not only physical skill but also strong mental discipline.
